Nail Fungus Causes and Symptoms

Foot Odor Causes

Nail fungus can be caused for a number of reasons; some more common than others. In this article we are going to identify these in more detail and also explain the symptoms in more details:

Nail Fungus Causes

There are a number of simple causes to nail fungus and these have been identified below:

Walking bare foot
If you frequent public swimming pools, or indeed use the changing rooms at your local gym then you are at risk of contracting nail fungus if you chose to walk around bare foot.
Wearing Shoes too tight
This can 'pinch' your feet and cause them to sweat more than they would normally do. This makes for an ideal breeding ground for fungus.
Trauma/Injury
If you have a minor cut or graze on your fingers or feet then this leaves the door wide open for the fungus to enter the nail bed.
Other fungal infections
If you have or have had athletes foot or any other fungal infection then this can easily transmit to your toes or fingers. These should be treated at the same time as your nails.
Weakened Immune system
If your immune system is weak (e.g. if you have leukemia or HIV etc) then your body may not be able to fight off the infection resulting in increased susceptibility, and even worse complications that may not have ordinarily been experienced.

Symptoms of Nail Fungus

The fungus develops very slowly over time and by the time you notice it, its foundations will be well laid out in the nail bed.

Symptoms include a yellow discoloration of the nail itself. The nail will become thick and sometimes brittle and in some cases it may appear to detach itself from the nail bed, with the root remaining in place. A thick, hard, fiberous substance will grow under the nail and distort the growth of the nail. It will also produce an unpleasant smell.

In summary, fungus can be caught quite easily in a wide number of environmental settings. However, the use of avoidance strategies such as not walking around with bare feet, treating cuts and other minor traumas, and also eradicating other fungal infections (e.g. athletes foot and ringworm) can ensure a lifetime free of fungus.
